We believe that a sacrament is a special act of Christian worship which uses visible signs to present God’s grace for us in Jesus Christ.  We also believe that two sacraments were given by Jesus:  baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
Baptism:  We believe that through baptism we are adopted and welcomed into God’s family.  In the waters of baptism we share in the dying and rising of Jesus, who washes away our sins.  We are made one with him and with all who are joined to him in the church.

Lord’s Supper:  We believe that in the Lord’s Supper we are fed at the table of God’s family.  Through the bread that we eat and the cup that we drink, the Lord offers us his body and blood.  He renews our faith and gives us the gift of eternal life.

We believe that prayer draws us closer to God.  We were created to live with God, who desires the prayers of our hearts and our hearts long for God and so we seek God in prayer.  When we pray we adore God, confess our sins, give God thanks and pray for the needs of others and ourselves.  Each Sunday we also pray as Jesus taught his disciples to pray in the words of the Lord’s Prayer which is:   Our Father, who art heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day, our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

Our Elders
Our particular congregation is governed by people elected from and by the congregation.  The people elected form our governing body, called the Session, and are called elders.  Together with the pastor, the elders exercise leadership, government, and have responsibilities related to the life and welfare of our congregation.  At First Presbyterian, these responsibilities include, among other things, being faithful in attending worship, being a part of the mission and outreach of the church and working with the different committees.

PC (USA) church
First Presbyterian is part of the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination.  We believe in and follow the PC (USA)’s constitution and support the larger church.  You can learn more about the PC (USA) by visiting the denomination’s website.  As part of the PC (USA), we believe in a connectional church.  We are not a congregation serving on our own but in connection with others.  To that end, we work and serve as part of the North Alabama Presbytery.  You can learn more about our presbytery ties through its website.  Many of the Presbyterian beliefs are evidenced in our seal.  You are invited to take a moment to examine the seal and learn more about it as it reveals many of our core beliefs.
